Kenny Schachter: An Iconoclastic Force in the Art World

Kenny Schachter: An Iconoclastic Force in the Art World

In light of our upcoming exhibition with Kenny Schachter it is time you learn about who he is and how he has set a food into the art world.

Kenny Schachter. A dealer, curator, and writer, who has made a significant impact on the art market with his unorthodox approach and willingness to take risks. His keen eye for emerging talent has helped to launch the careers of many successful contemporary artists, and his critical writing has challenged established norms and questioned the value of certain artworks and practices.

Born and raised in the United States, Kenny Schachter pursued a degree in philosophy and political science at George Washington University. He went on to complete a JD at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York, but his passion for art led him in a different direction. He soon realised that he didn’t want a routinely 9-5 job but wanted to step a foot in the art world.

Schachter's career in the art world began in the 1980s when he started working as an art dealer, specializing in contemporary art. When he realized that the New York art scene was saturated with galleries, he started traveling and buying art from studios around the world to sell to dealers back in New York. He even started curating Pop-Up Exhibitions before the term became popular.

He quickly gained a reputation for his unconventional approach to the art market, which often involved taking risks on emerging artists and exhibiting their work in unconventional spaces, such as abandoned factories and warehouses, and collaborated with artists to create immersive, site-specific installations.. In 1993, he opened his own gallery, called Kenny Schachter Contemporary Art, in New York City.

In 2002, Schachter moved to London and opened a new gallery, called Rove. He continued to exhibit emerging and established artists, including Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, and Chris Ofili. He also curated several group exhibitions, including "Demolition Derby," which featured works by emerging British artists.

Kenny Schachter is also known for his outspoken and sometimes controversial opinions on the art world, which he shares in his writing and public speaking engagements. He has written for publications such as Artforum, The New York Times, and The Art Newspaper, and has published several books on contemporary art. His writing often takes a critical and irreverent approach to the art world, challenging established norms and questioning the value of certain artworks and practices. Schachter has been vocal in his criticism of the art world's elitism, arguing that it excludes many talented artists who do not fit the traditional mold.

Without a doubt a unique and influential figure in the art world. His unconventional approach to the art market, his support of emerging artists, and his critical writing have made him a respected and controversial voice in contemporary art. As the art world continues to evolve, it is likely that Schachter will continue to challenge established norms and push boundaries in the years to come. His contributions to the art world have been significant, and his legacy will undoubtedly endure for many years to come.

Kenny also made his foray into the world of NFTs, quickly becoming a prominent figure within the NFT community. His boundless enthusiasm and passion for the space make him a true force of nature, and his influence can be felt throughout the NFT sphere.

Schachter's story teaches us that passion, determination, and a willingness to take risks can lead to success in the art world and beyond.
